"bad ipods happen to good people"

that's what the nice man behind the "apple genius" counter told me upon being asked what i had done to kill my ipod. you see, just a minute before, he had solemnly told me that my ipod was, indeed, dead (long live my ipod).
the kid who was in line after me told me that since it was past warranty and thus, worthless, that there would be no harm in my taking it apart and putting it back together. that helped him once.
so if anyone has any advice on how to find a how-to on repairing one's own ipod, let me know. as far as i can tell, there's no way to even open the thing...because i'm not mechanically inclined.
i can get 10% off my next ipod if i bring in the bad one, which is little consolation to me, because ipods are expensive and i'm trying to not spend money on things. (you know i'm going to break down and buy one asap if i can't fix the old one).

**edit: i just looked on ebay and amazon, and it looks like i can get between $65 and $90 for the broken ipod and buy a new 30G video ipod for $250. what do you guys think?

No more ipods, if you need an mp3 player than we'll look into one that doesn't involve paying the ipod premium (the $250 more than it's really worth).

I love my i-pod as well but remember that Apple does not love us. The day after I bought Flint an i-pod mini (because I had one and I could not afford to replace his full size i-pod) Apple stopped supporting the updates for them. Now if anything wrong happens I have to ask the almighty oracle I mean internet to find me one.
Sorry that I can not recomend a better device...well not an MP3 player anyway.

i've played with justin's non-ipod, and he's given me a thorough review of his friends' non-ipods, and i'm very happy with my nano. I'd check craigslist though - lots of people are probably selling theirs now that the video and the nano have come out.

that's good advice. i'd be afraid to spend money on the same model i had because mine was barely over a year old, and there were lots of broken ones on ebay that had the same symptoms as mine. i think i'd want the new video one. i don't want video, but i would want it to not have the same glitch.

I'd look at the Dell DJ....when my mini goes, I think that's what I'm going to go for. Lot's o' storage, and it doesn't take anything special to load it up.

Having said that, the new video iPod is sweet. Sound quality is *much* improved over the old ones (especially my damn mini).

i just did some research and it seems like the ones you guys suggested wouldn't be all that much cheaper. ok, they are cheaper, but not when you take into account the money i get for selling the broken one on ebay.
no advice on fixing the darn thing?
and aside from the itunes issue (which doesn't bother me) what makes the other players better?

I've done battery replacement on my older iPod, and I will probably never replace the whole unit. That's the only thing I've ever had a probelm with (well, the inline remotes too, but that's not an "iPod" problem). I plan to do a replacement on the headphone jack too, once I hvae proper soldering equipment available.

Anyway, keep in mind that most of the people that are at theses places are really salespeople in disguise. There's lots of info on the net by the public about how to resurrect an iPod.

I'll see if I can get it open when Steph and I get down there tonight. Depending on what generation it is, it may very well be just the battery, which could put you back up in running for $30 or less.
