i hate to post twice in one day, but i just saw a great movie and thought i'd let you guys in on it. it's been out for 6 years, so maybe everyone who'd like it has already seen it, but the movie is bread and roses, and if you haven't seen it, you should check it out. it's about immigrants who unionize in los angeles.
maybe it's not the best movie i've ever seen, but it was right up my alley. it was missing any hint of comedy, though. i think it's possible to make a movie about an intensely serious or troubling subject and use humor in a respectful way. take for example, the movie life is beautiful. most people i know don't think the holocaust was funny, but here, roberto benigni shows the world how it's possible to write a story about one of the world's worst tragedies and include humor in the story...tastefully.
it takes a great movie to make you cry. and once in a while, you come across a movie that can make you both laugh and cry.
i don't understand people who can't confront the sad things in life. sure, i don't sit around and listen to only music or watch movies that make me think about depressing things. but we can't hide from the stories that tell us about the hardships people have gone through in life. to do so makes us shallow and ignorant.
