the clouds have parted for the last half hour making me remember why i think this place is beautiful!
flint and stephanie came over this weekend with stephanie's kid dylan. he's fantastic! we had a lot of fun. we tried to take him to see the chinese new year celebration, but we just missed the lion dance, so we took him to see wallace and grommit instead. the theater by my house that i hadn't been to yet was the one that was showing it. it's a mcmennamins, and we paid $3 for the tickets. the ceiling is domed and really pretty. flint took a look at my ipod and said he didn't think it was beyond rescue, so i started looking online today and i found this. that sounds exactly like my problem! and with photos and everything. that looks like a repair i could do by myself. luckily, i have a healthy fear of exacto knives, so i'll wait till nathan gets home, before i slice my hand up.
i looked up the hard drive on ebay and it looks like i can get one for less than $150. Maybe way less. Do any of you know if it's possible for me to put a bigger hard drive in it, since i have to do this anyway? i mean, i could get a 40G or 60G now. what do you guys think? is there anything else fun i can do to it, now that i'm cracking it open and tinkering?
*edit: woo hoo! i tried the tip in comment #16 on that blog i linked to, and the thing is back up and working like a champ! to be honest, i did drop it right before it stopped working, but since it had been acting up in other ways for a couple of weeks beforehand, and the guy at the apple store didn't say that that might have been the cause when i asked, i figured that probably wasn't it. so apparently, i must have a bad connection to the hard drive. i should crack it open and re-connect it, but i don't want to risk breaking it again. i'm only gonna do that if it stops working again. and one of the comments said that if you want to get the ipod open without scratching it, the best tool is a flat, slim piece of plastic, like a guitar pick! i read that and my jaw dropped and i thought, "guitar pick! i have one of those!" luckily, it was almost working at that time, so i didn't have to crack it open at all.

wow! you're my new hero! i can't believe you got it working.
i've never been a hero before! this day just gets better and better. i think i'll go win the lottery now. or start an ipod repair business...whichever is more lucrative.
You can probably upgrade the hard drive, but there's always that off chance that there's some firmware issue built into the thing for a specific drive side.
If you can get a model number and a good price, maybe get a bigger drive. If you want to be more certain it'll still work, stick to the same model drive.
thanks flint!
The bigger drives ( 60G and maybe the 40 too) are slightly thicker...
You might be able to put in a 30 gig drive, though...
