almost found

i'm getting close to finding the house. there's one i'm willing to put in an offer on in north portland. it's big, cute, and has a basement that's almost a rentable unit, so there would be income off it once i added a shower, a kitchenette and a wall to seperate it from my laundry area. Portland houses have basements (which is new to me) and a lot of them keep the laundry hookups down there. I'm still going to look at a couple more houses though, but I can't fathom not being ready to put in an offer by saturday or sunday.
the house that's at the top of the list now only needs the aforementioned work done in the basement, and as far as the house itself goes, the only thing that needs to be done is to repaint the mantle. the previous owners went and crackle painted it. idiots. the backyard also needs some trees taken out before nathan can have a good garden. the neighborhood has plenty of shops and bars within walking distance, but it's not a cute neighborhood like belmont, woodstock, alberta arts or st. johns. it is, however, right next to the st. johns area which has a nice, pretty downtown section, and that fantastic bridge. the only other thing that isn't perfect about the house, besides the neighborhood, is that the street is kind of busy. it's not a big enough deal to worry about though. and there's a nice japanese maple in the front yard and lavender.
i don't have my heart set on it, but it's the best house we've seen so far. if it's still available and i don't find anything in a nicer neighborhood, it's the house for me (as long as my offer is accepted).
it'll be a big relief to finally get into a house. the apartment we live in is nice, but it's small and most of our stuff is still in storage. plus, we live in the burbs, and while i don't have to drive everywhere, i do have to drive to a lot of places. the closest shopping center to my house isn't accessible by the max, so it's impractical to use the max for most of my shopping. living in a walking neighborhood will be a huge plus for me. i walked the neighborhood the house is in yesterday, and that walk, on top of the walk i took max on earlier that day made my legs feel nicely sore today. i can't wait to get into shape. nathan and i are both working at it. it won't happen overnight, since we didn't get fat overnight, but it's going to happen. life is looking up in the northwest right now.

Funny about the basement thing. It's fairly typical in west coast housing. I suppose if you're used to east coast housing (particularly the southeast), all a basement is is a water storage facility when it floods, thanks to sub-sea-level ground.

St. Johns always struck me as largely industrial, so I'm guessing you're looking in an area more towards downtown (SE), particularly since I can't think of any large urban neighborhoods on the west side of the bridge.

True irony would be if you found a place in Portsmouth - lots of nice bad memories for Nathan.

hey flint!
yeah, the south has no basements. well, virginia had some in norfolk, but they did get flooded during isabel. i didn't ever see a basement when i was a kid in california. ok, i guess my cousin's house in oakland had one, but it wasn't your typical basement. it was more of a tall crawl space.
it is irony that you said that about portsmouth, because that's where the house we're looking at right now is. haha.
the st. johns i'm talking about is on the east side of the willamette, but it's considered north portland. northeast being east of the interstate, and southeast being south of I84, i guess. this is north of that, but i love se portland.

Fuck you and your husband, I hope your house burns down while it's full of kittens and orphans. And then bees, attack the reamaining children and elderly in the area, bees that carry the Avian Flu. And perhaps a South Korean special forces troop can come in behind to wipe out the bees, and the rest of whats left. Then of course we'd need a mongoose to chase out the spec-ops unit, and we all know what that means.. But where do you find a Carthaginian armored war Elephant in modern day Portland?

angela,
thanks for noticing my blog. if i get into a neighborhood that you don't have lots of info on yet, i'll write for you.
chance,
i would try chinatown first. then yesterday i noticed that there's a small asian section in the northeast area. that's probably your best bet for an elephant. unless of course you want to go the obvious route and get one from the zoo. but it won't come with armor. you'll have to figure that one out yourself.
