i constantly write new blog entries in my head, which is why i was kind of surprised to find that lots of the things i had "posted" in the last few days weren't here.
we've been getting to know the area a little bit more. i've gotten to use the public transportation here which feels fabulous. the trains are new, spacious and quiet. it seems like everything has been thought of here. even providing enough places for people to hold onto. it seems funny that everything here is so convenient.
everything, that is, except the roads. maybe i've just been getting tired of being in a car from all the travelling, or maybe i'm a bad driver (that's right, i admit it. you should be happy i know it and i'm getting myself off the road), or maybe it's just due to not knowing my way around, but it seems like the streets here are not designed to make life easy on drivers. this makes me happy until i'm in the car.
today we went into the city and got some breakfast before nathan had to take his piss test. this little breakfast place was awesome! i got a spinach and feta crepe and some of the best coffee i've ever tasted. then we went to powell's bookstore, which was also awesome, and i'm told takes up the whole city block. unfortunately, for some reason, we drove; which we regretted about 3 minutes into the trip and the whole way back. serves us right. we get what we deserve.
nathan bought a lovely new propane grill and yesterday we had chicken tandoori which i saved and will have for lunch and it was fantastic.
we've bought a new couch which will have to take a month to get here because it's being reupholstered in pet-friendly microfiber. in the meantime, and in true hersey fashion, we have a camp chair in our living room.
tonight we will probably go and buy our new monitor/t.v.
we've been buying a lot of stuff lately, but i think that's the last major purchase to be made. i know i'm trying to go without t.v., but i'm not hooking it up to many channels, and raise your hand if you want to live with a g.t.a-less nathan. that's right, i didn't think so. plus, we like to rent movies. time for a netflix account.
i'm also busy writing a cover letter to post on craigslist. if kirsten got a job that way, i'm hoping i can too.
funny story:
if you have ever stored your furniture and possessions in a 100-year-old, uninhabited warehouse style building in southern alabama, then you will know that a creature that i am told is called the "wood roach" will infest your belongings. we had to jettison an entire box of our computer peripherals because, unbeknownst to me, my mother had put a loaf of bread in it, thinking we would find it. we did not. it stayed in storage that way for a month and was infested with the horrible monsters who had left their residue all over my mouse, keyboard, printer, speakers and cable modem. after tossing the box, we breathed a sigh of relief that it was all over. until we got to portland. while moving my dresser from truck to storage unit, we found another colony of the nasty bastards in my dresser drawers, surviving on nothing that i could find. so we killed them all, put the dresser in the unit, fogged and baited the unit, and left it there for the time we'll live in this apartment. hopefully, the buggers can't survive in the northwest, but just in case, i've put bait traps all over my house, and i'm going through the process of washing ever single article of clothing we own (two boxes over 10 cubic feet each) and every dish we own. thankfully, the APARTMENT has a DISHWASHER, but it will still probably take me the next few days at least to get through all the laundry.
moral: don't store your crap in AL.
moral: i get what i deserve.

i would love to have everyone come visit me. it's a little cramped in this apartment, but in a few weeks, we'll have nice comfy couches to sleep on, and we should be buying a house at the end of this year/early next year, so we expect everyone we know to come visit us.
