computer decision

we are considering buying a nice new apple laptop to be our new main computer. the one we have now is a total p.o.s. and we've had it for almost 4 years. plus, it's a desktop, so it won't be useful when we go on our voyage this summer.
the three main things we use the computer for are: internet, music, and photos. we almost never use it for anything else. sure, we play a little poker, and every now and again, we use the word processing, but mostly, it's just those three things that need to work all the time.
nathan thinks we should go with a powerbook and he's really got his sights set on the one with the 17" screen. he's worried about when the new os is coming out, wants to know what the real difference between the powerbook and imac is, and why they don't make a laptop with g5.
any input from you guys would be helpful.

You will never have the latest OS on a mac, I really dig the powerbooks though! If you get a 17 inch maybe they can throw in a free mini, those things are the coolest!

Amen to Christina's post. The reason that they don't make a G5 PowerBook yet is probably because they haven't figured out a way for it not to consume 69 watts of power (heat, battery life issues). Where I work, we have one of the new IBM blades that use the same chip and the heat sinks are *massive.*
