when a student feels bullied in my class, i have them write up an incident report for me. this is what i received from one student. here is my transcription:
When I am in Ms. Hersey class the girls like to pick on me such as (names deleted). I try to seperate from but, Ms Hersey puts me with them any way. And if tell she doesn't do nothing she alway gets me. Thats why I don't like her class.
Sincerely,
(Name deleted)
ya heard
Ps. I don't like that class.
Translation: the part about "she always gets me" is a common phrase my kids use. if they feel like someone needs to get in trouble, they'll shout "mrs. hersey, get him!" I'm not sure what they expect me to do, but i'm not aware of how to "get" someone. so i usually don't bother. but apparently, this kid feels like i always "get" him.
again, i realize that a person who doesn't feel like capitalization is mandatory on the internet has no business teaching fourth-graders language arts.
my favorite part of this note is the "ya heard". it cracks me up every time.

You should tell your kids that I will come get them. And then tell them the story about how I took the little kid out to the woods, and he was all duct taped up and it was getting dark and he started getting scared and said "Mr. Chance, its dark and scary out here!" And I said, "damn kid how do you think I feel?" "I have to walk back to the car alone." and you can tell them that sometimes when I get kids it involves a black rubber didlo with no less than eight 16-penny nails driven through it.
ya heard
Ps. I don't like that kids.
Goof! Translate 'ya heard'! Hut!

chance to the future.
i'll look at your punk rawk cawk. when else will i ever get that sort of opportunity?
I feel for you! I watched school of rock a couple of days ago and felt for you, if only you had gotten a good set of kids!!!! You should make them lisen to real music as homework!!!!
and you know i would. i'd bring my guitar to class and everything, like my fourth-grade teacher did. but i am still trying to find ways to incorporate cool into my lessons. i think i'm going to have them write songs. i'll update as that goes along...if i ever get the guts to do it.
"ya heard" is the best salutation ever!
