Hey check your preferences on iTunes, under importing, I know that on the newer versions of I-tunes the default format is AAC that new mp3 type format, if that is the case than just convert your files to MP3 unless you like the new format then you can convert your mp3's into AAC! If this aint the issue than I dont know what's up!
