hypocrisy

i know i don't have any room to talk, but i have to say that i absolutely agree with biff and nathan on their views about bicycles vs. automobiles. if any of you aren't familiar with all of this, i urge you to visit biff's blog. the link is on the side of this page. biff doesn't own a car, yet somehow, he survives. i'm sick of this forced dependency on my car and the only reason i'm not bike commuting to work now, is that i can't find a safe route to take. call me crazy, or not crazy enough, but i'm not crossing the interstate entrance/exit on my bicycle. ever. i know nathan does it every day, but i like my brains inside my skull. hopefully i'll get a teaching job within reach, but i'm not keeping my fingers crossed. on friday i had to apply to portsmouth city schools. hooray for teaching in the ghetto! everyone needs to visit biff's website and then post your objections to bicycling (or walking or using public transportation) to go places on this blog. i know most of the good rebuttals, and if i don't, biff and nathan do. and for any hampton roads natives, if any of you know how to get from my house to greenbrier without crossing the interstate, let me know. i heard of a path going under the freeway near woodlake drive, but i looked for it today and couldn't find it. by the way, christina g. does not use a bicycle, but to her credit, she does not own an automobile, or use one to go places. she uses the good old train, like a literate citizen, or walks. so she's my hero too. oi oi.
poo on cities that don't have viable public transport. you all suck.
if americans refused to drive their nancy kids to school and made them ride their fat asses there, they wouldn't be so friggin fat anymore.
biff's blog is full of interesting links, so for those of you new to the concept of using your bicycle as a sole means of transportation, his website should be really informative. i want you all to go there. i mean it.
so, here are the comments i want you guys to leave: a) biff, do you know the average speed most cars go over their driven lifetime? and the average speed a bicyclist (not a racer, but a commuter) can go? b) all of everyone else's reasons for not biking. if you're scared of cars like me, let me know. i know that there is tons of advice to help you out. like i said, if i could just get around the *expletive deleted* interstate, i'd bike to work too. c) how can i get over that interstate???

That's awesome. I need to update my links - they're really out of date. Plus, I just deleted a lot of the oil-related ones - because noone seems to give a flip about it.

As far as speed of an automobile during it's lifetime, read this article. The average speed info is down the page a bit.

For your average commuter - they can easily maintain a 12-15mph pace.

Fear of biking is pretty contagious. It's engrained into our collective heads that biking is for kids - or as a sport - not a means of transportation. Here's a good article about it.

Notice that both the articles came from kenkifer.com. I would say that his site is the best reference when it comes to starting out. It definitely gave me confidence when commuting.
